Post-viral syndrome is a health condition or symptoms that occur after a viral infection. Even after you thought you recovered, you are left feeling drained, tired, and unwell for days, weeks, months, and even years.
Viruses that may result in post-viral syndrome include the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes, pneumonia, HIV and COVID-19. A COVID-19 infection which can lead to post-viral syndrome, is also known as COVID-19, long hauler syndrome or long-COVID and is quite common.
According to a 2021 study published in MedRXiv, about 27 percent of COVID-19 patients end up with long hauler syndrome.
The trigger of your symptoms of post-viral syndrome may be the virus itself. Though symptoms of post-viral syndrome are often similar to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), there is one major difference. CFS usually begins for no clear reason, seemingly out of nowhere, while post-viral syndrome begins after an infection.
