It’s not just what’s on your plate, but what’s within your gut that determines whether you can easily shed extra pounds. New research, published by the American Society for Microbiology, found that slow growth of the “good” bacteria in your digestive tract may play a role in stalled weight loss.
“Your gut microbiome can help or cause resistance to weight loss and this opens up the possibility to try to alter the gut microbiome to impact weight loss,” stated Christian Diener, PhD.
In the year-long weight loss program study, individuals who lost most weight had the fastest growth rate of certain beneficial gut bacteria, while those whose weight loss efforts were least successful had the slowest rate of growth.
